To help combat these concerns, county officials developed the San Diego County Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force (PDATF), which is composed of various community stakeholders and local experts that work to decrease prescription drug abuse.

In May 2022, the El Cajon Police Department conducted a raid on a local drug dealer's home and vehicle that resulted in the discovery of a large number of illicit drugs. The drug bust comes after El Cajon's special investigations unit identified the suspect as a drug dealer operating throughout the city and East County area.

With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Services, law enforcement served search warrants at a residence on Rancho Mission Road near the Grantville neighborhood. After detaining the suspect, law enforcement recovered thousands of varying prescription drug pills and three pounds of fentanyl. Officials also discovered a machine used to develop untraceable firearms, as well as five ghost guns the machine had produced.
