Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Chevy-Chase, MD

Chevy-Chase, MD and Montgomery County are addressing this opioid problem. In 2018, the county developed a program to help opioid users by saving lives and offering support. The focus has been on the distribution of Naloxone, also known as Narcan, which is a medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses. This medication can give those who overdose on opioids a second chance at life.

In June of 2020, Chevy-Chase and Montgomery county had 12 fatal overdoses and 245 non-fatal overdoses related to opioids. The administration of Naloxone saved 39 lives.

According to the Maryland Department of Health, the number of fatalities related to drug and alcohol overdoses increased in 2018 for the eighth consecutive year. Eighty-nine percent of these deaths that occurred in the state were opioid-related.

According to Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office, "To tackle this epidemic and reduce the number of overdose deaths, the State's Attorney's Office for Montgomery County has initiated Speak up, Save a Life, an Opioid Overdose Education and Prevention Program. Our mission is to educate students, families, and the community about the opioid epidemic and provide knowledge of Maryland's Good Samaritan Law."

Another tool Montgomery County began to use to fight its opioid problem is a tool called COPE, which stands for Community Opioid Prevention Education. Inside the trailer is what appears to be a normal bedroom and bathroom. But hidden inside are signs of a drug addiction that are easily missed by friends and family. COPE is used as an educational tool for showing signs to look for that may indicate drug addiction.

Recovery specialists in Montgomery County are responding by offering extended support to drug overdose victims. Online resources are also available.
