Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Candler, NC

In July 2021, the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of three Candler area residents for their roles in a drug trafficking operation. Following a traffic stop, one of the suspects, Leonel Garcia, fled the scene. Deputies later identified the vehicle to belong to an individual who was currently part of a drug trafficking investigation.

Although the pursuit was terminated, law enforcement later discovered the vehicle at the suspect's home, where he was then arrested. At the residence, law enforcement also seized 2.35 pounds of methamphetamine, 10 grams of cocaine, an AR-15 pistol, and $1,226 in cash.

Law enforcement also arrested Elijah Ray Clinkscales-King and Darra Leigh Jarvis at the scene of the seizure and charged the group with various charges, including methamphetamine and cocaine trafficking, felony flee to elude arrest, and possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver narcotics. The investigation comes in part with Buncombe County's efforts to dismantle high-level drug trafficking operations located throughout the county.

Programs Relating to Substance Abuse in Candler, NC

In 2014, Project CARA: Care that Advocates Respect/Resilience/Recovery for All was established to assist pregnant women and parents with ongoing substance abuse issues. The project goal is to reduce the stigma surrounding perinatal substance abuse disorder and provide the necessary environments and resources for those who need help. Services include pregnancy care, drug counseling services, and medication treatment for substance use disorders.

Project CARA is located inside of an OB-GYN care facility and is staffed with both medical and substance abuse professionals. With the help of this program, partners hope to lower the rate of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) and Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) in the Buncombe County and surrounding Western North Carolina area.
