Greenville, South Carolina: Drug abuse trends

Greenville, located in Greenville County, South Carolina, has been facing significant drug abuse trends, particularly involving opioids. In 2020, opioids were involved in a high proportion of all drug overdoses in Greenville County, accounting for 78 percent of cases. Fentanyl, a highly potent opioid, is a major concern in the area. Senior Deputy Coroner Kent Dill has highlighted that fentanyl is frequently detected in toxicology cases and is often mixed with other illicit drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. The extreme potency of fentanyl, which is fifty to a hundred times more potent than morphine, contributes to its heightened danger.

In terms of fatalities, Greenville County experienced an alarming increase in overdose deaths. In 2020, there was a nearly 25 percent rise in overdose deaths, with 180 individuals losing their lives to drug overdoses compared to 145 in the previous year. Over the course of 2019 to 2020, Greenville County had a significant 29.3 percent increase in overall drug overdose fatalities, with opioid-related overdose deaths seeing a 41.2 percent surge.

Authorities arrested 19 people on weapon and drug charges in Greenville County

In April 2023, authorities in Greenville County arrested 19 people on drug and weapon charges. The operation's main goal was to identify people responsible for the cause of fentanyl overdoses. The authorities seized two machine presses used to manufacture fentanyl, six firearms, 102 grams of methamphetamine, 13 grams of fentanyl, 7 grams of crack and powder cocaine, and 165 grams of marijuana.
