In 2017, alcohol use led to injuries in 134 people and two deaths in West Saint Paul, MN and Dakota County. These injuries made up 6.5 percent of all motor vehicle injuries and 18 percent of motor vehicle deaths, according to the Dakota County Public Health Department
In Dakota County in 2016-2017, eight percent of people 12 and older admitted to marijuana use in the previous month. Nineteen percent of these people were between the ages of 18-25.
In 2016, four percent of 8th graders, nine percent of 9th graders, and 24 percent of 11th graders admitted to using marijuana in the last 12 months.
In 2016, marijuana was reported as the primary substance of abuse in 17 percent of residents who were admitted to chemical dependency treatment.
Opioids were reported as the primary substance of abuse in 19 percent of Dakota County residents.
Methamphetamine was reported as the primary substance of abuse in 17 percent of residents.
In 2017, there were 39 fatal overdoses among Dakota County residents.
Seventy-two percent of overdose deaths were a result of heroin and other opioids.
From 2006-2012, 54,248,141 prescription pain pills were distributed in Dakota County.
According to the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General, since the year 2000, several shifts have been made in the law to help with the proper disposal of prescription medications, expanding treatment options for residents that are addicted to opioids, and controlling prescription drug abuse.
There are federal laws in place that affect the disposal of prescription medications, and disposing of these medications promptly reduces the chance of them being misused.
According to the DEA, “[Previous] restrictions [on drug disposal] resulted in the accumulation of pharmaceutical controlled substances in household medicine cabinets that were available for abuse, misuse, diversion, and accidental digestion.”
