Saint Paul, Minnesota: Drug abuse trends

According to recent findings, about 59 percent of all fatal drug overdoses in Minnesota involved opioids. Eighteen percent of those deaths were alcohol-related. There was a significant increase in overdose deaths in the period between the years 2019 and 2020. Among women only, there was a decrease in opioid overdose deaths between 2017 and 2018.

Minnesota's men have higher proportions of opioid and alcohol-related overdoses. The number of individuals dying from overdoses has increased from 2011 to 2020. There was an abrupt increase between 2019 and 2020 during the pandemic. In 2021, overdose death became Minnesota's leading cause of injury death.

Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in Saint Paul, MN

Minnesota recently won a 26 billion multi-state lawsuit against opioid pharmaceutical companies and an opioid manufacturer. Ramsey County Public Health is seeking input from the community on how to use the settlement money to help those individuals affected by opioids. They want to give them the resources they need and provide them with important information and education on addiction and overdoses.

A survey provided by Ramsey County is currently open through July 2022 to determine how to handle the money that they received and how to use these resources over time. Residents and community partners providing services in the county are all invited to give feedback.
