Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Tacoma, WA
The City of Tacoma Fire Department created the Opioid Response Program in an effort to implement various strategies to reduce drug overdose mortalities in the city. The program currently hosts four components that target multiple concerns of the ongoing opioid epidemic taking place across Tacoma and the surrounding Washington state.
The first component is a Narcan distribution program that provides free “rescue kits” containing the opioid overdose emergency treatment drug to combat the deadly side effects of an opioid overdose. Secondly, the response program hosts free community training classes for the general public to help teach useful skills, like CPR, that can be used in the event of an emergency opioid overdose.
The third component is a Safe Station Program, which opens the doors of local fire stations to residents battling substance abuse issues. It provides resources, such as in-person medical assessment and opioid treatment services, for those in need. Lastly, the program initiated a mobile response unit to provide individuals with intervention services, such as withdrawal stabilization and medical referrals, in an in-person setting.
