Riverside County’s Gang Impact Team was staffed by multiple local police agencies, sheriff’s deputies, and law officers from the D.A.’s Office. Officers discovered more than $1.5 million worth of drugs, including 40,000 M-30 pills laced with fentanyl and 5 kilograms of powdered fentanyl.

In May of 2022, Operation Walk in the Park led to the arrest of 17 individuals of a Riverside street gang after officers seized thousands of dollars’ worth of drugs and 55 firearms. In addition, the two-year-long investigation also solved two homicides in Riverside and Moreno Valley, one of them a fatal shooting of a 32-year-old father of nine children at a Riverside park in 2020.

Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Riverside, CA

After a Riverside father lost his 19-year-old daughter to fentanyl in 2019, his persistence changed how law enforcement handles overdose deaths in Riverside County. The man’s daughter purchased what she thought was an oxycodone pill online, but the pill was counterfeit and contained fentanyl.

Now, Riverside County dedicates K9 officers trained in detecting fentanyl and has added four experienced officers assigned to overdose death cases. Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies and DEA agents say that nearly every single pill they see contains fentanyl disguised as a legitimate prescription drug.
