Fentanyl—a potent and deadly opioid—also began to make its way to the streets more often, and its use has continued to be a growing problem for the state. In 2020, Broward County reported that, for the very first time, alcohol was not the most prevalent substance abused. Fentanyl became the number one drug used in the county. At about 100 times the strength of morphine, fentanyl overdoses surged. In the same year, there was also a 67 percent increase in cocaine use, and the deaths caused by methamphetamine increased by 56 percent compared to 2019.
Plantation police found body in hotel’s illegal meth lab
Plantation police found and identified a body in a hotel. A 35-year-old man, originally from Georgia, has likely died from a methamphetamine overdose. The police found illicit chemicals in his hotel room and believed he made drugs for personal use. By the time police arrived, he was already dead. Authorities are still investigating the case.
