Local News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Perris, CA

In June 2022, the U.S. Attorney's Office Central District of California announced an indictment against a Riverside County resident for his role in a mass methamphetamine trafficking operation. According to the indictment, the Perris resident planned to supply a co-conspirator with large amounts of methamphetamine, which he manufactured and distributed from a homemade laboratory.

The Perris resident went on to distribute roughly 34 pounds of methenamine back in 2021 to a local buyer, which resulted in a search of his residence where law enforcement discovered more than 17.6 pounds of methamphetamine, 12.6 pounds of marijuana, five gallons of methamphetamine solution, and numerous firearms. At the time of the raid, law enforcement also found 2-year-old and 3-year-old children, which resulted in placement into Child Protective Services (CPS).

Laws and Regulations Relating to Drug Use in Perris, CA

Back in October 2021, California Governor Gavin Newson passed Senate Bill 73 to end mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent criminals in the state of California. Having gone into effect on January 1, 2022, the new law gives judges across the state more discretion to impose alternative sentences in an effort to curb the rising number of substance abuse issues in offenders.

According to bill details, the changes in sentencing laws come at a time when California officials are seeing excessive jail populations containing many offenders who have committed low-level nonviolent drug offenses. Officials hope that with this new law, judges can focus more on promoting the use of probation, rehabilitation, and treatment efforts rather than jail time to curb repeated drug offenses and abuse concerns in residents.
