Through the council, various initiatives are undertaken to tackle the heavy presence of drug and alcohol dependency in Olney, MD. For instance, the council works with Montgomery County public and private schools to provide evidence-based curriculum that educates students, parents, and teachers on the risk of substance abuse. Likewise, the council advocates for adequate funding to provide substance abuse prevention and treatment programs for residents in need.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Olney, MD

In 2017, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed the 2017 Heroin and Opioid Prevention, Treatment, and Enforcement Initiative legislation into law to address the ongoing heroin and opioid crisis experienced across the state. Legislation included numerous house bills that tackled the concern from multiple angles, such as updated prescribing practices and new penalties for drug dealers.

Under HB1432, also known as the Prescriber Limits Act of 2017, healthcare professionals must now only prescribe the lowest effective dose of an opioid when treating a patient. This helps reduce unnecessary overuse of opioid prescriptions to further limit the chances of deadly opioid overdose. Another act signed into law was the Opioids Resulting in Death Act, which allows prosecutors to seek an additional 10 year jail sentence for drug dealers who knowingly sold fentanyl that resulted in the overdose death of at least four individuals.
