Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Use in Mount Airy, MD

In May 2023, Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed a new bill into law that would require hospitals to screen patients for fentanyl during a toxicology report. The Josh Siems Act is a first-of-its-kind bill aimed at saving the lives of patients who may be suffering from fentanyl overdose. This act is named after Josh Siems, who was treated for an apparent overdose at a Maryland hospital but was not screened for fentanyl and passed away shortly after.

Under the previous Maryland code, hospitals were only required to (and typically only) screen patients for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and PCP. Now, under the Josh Siems Act, hospitals must also screen patients suffering from a known or suspected overdose of fentanyl to better address in-the-moment treatment needs. Furthermore, hospitals will be required to report this testing data to Maryland officials to help ensure continuous compliance.

Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse Concerns in Mount Airy, MD

A group of U.S. senators announced that $1,249,912 in federal funding would be awarded to the state of Maryland in July 2022 in accordance with efforts to address youth substance abuse concerns across local communities. This grant comes in part of the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program, which is administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).

With this funding, various Maryland drug prevention coalitions, such as Drug-Free Baltimore and the Access to Wholistic and Productive Living Institute, will receive a share of the award to help enhance their efforts to reduce substance abuse amongst the local youth populations. These coalitions currently serve communities by implementing evidence-based prevention tactics across Maryland to reduce youth substance abuse and the deadly consequences associated with it.
