Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Oakland DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Oakland Woman Discovers 35 Siblings After Taking a DNA Test

When Susan Simon, of Oakland, was growing up, she never had a reason to question her paternity. However, when she decided to take a DNA test "just for the fun of it," she was shocked to learn that her biological father was not the man who had raised her. Instead, he was actually a "serial sperm donor" who had donated sperm many times over the span of more than 25 years. Initial DNA test results showed that she had 14 half-siblings, with that number later ballooning to 35.

While she felt "numb" for quite some time after first learning of her test results, eventually, she began to get excited. After growing up as an only child and losing both her mother and the father who had raised her, she was alone. Once she had some time to get used to the idea, she said, "What a gift at this stage in life to suddenly find a new family." After the discovery, she was able to reunite with some of her siblings, saying it was "cool" to "meet these people you have all these things in common with."

DNA Test Helps Adopted Oakland Woman Reunite with Her Father

Michelle Cehn, a 31-year-old from Oakland, had always known she was adopted. After finding her birth mother on Facebook and reuniting with her, she set out to find her birth father. Without a name or photo, she thought she had little chance of locating a parent who never knew she existed. However, after taking a DNA test and spending years researching and attempting to connect with distant relatives, she finally found him. They were able to meet, and he introduced her to a half-brother, aunts, cousins, and her grandparents. Michelle is thrilled and says, "I'm still pinching myself to make sure this is all real."

R&B Singer Elite Noel's Paternity Mystery

R&B singer and songwriter Elite Noel is known for her popular tracks like Bae and Count Up, as well as for being the sister of renowned musician and singer Keyshia Cole. Noel was born in Oakland, CA in 1985. Since her mother, Francine (Frankie) Lons, was very young, Noel was adopted by another family member when she was only three months old. Her biological father was never identified.

While she was raised by a man named Ellis "Vic" Randolph, her mother revealed that her biological father may have actually been Randolph's brother William "Ronnie" Randolph III. However, a 2020 DNA test revealed that neither man was biologically related to her. As of now Noel still does not know the identity of her birth father.
