In February 2022, the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced the prison sentencing of a Nampa man for his role in drug distribution. A Treasure Valley Metro Violent Crimes Task Force investigation revealed a local drug dealer was found to have distributed a multitude of illicit drugs, including methamphetamine and compressed fentanyl pills, to various purchasers.

The investigation discovered the suspect sold fentanyl pills to an individual in January 2020 and warned the user that the pills were “hot” and to be careful when ingesting the drug, as it had been the cause of seven or eight local overdose deaths. Following the court decision, the Nampa offender was ordered to serve 60 months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Nampa, ID

Back in July 2021, legislative updates were made to the existing Idaho Pharmacy Act to better target the ongoing concern of deadly opioid overdose. These new provisions include efforts to increase public access to Naloxone, an emergency overdose drug used to reverse the deadly effects brought on during the event of an overdose.

Under Idaho Statute 54-1733B of the Pharmacy Act, any licensed health professional is now able to prescribe and dispense Naloxone when acting in good faith and exercising reasonable care for the public. Family members or community-based organizations dealing with individuals who are at risk of opioid overdose can receive either a nasal spray or injectable form of Naloxone in an effort to reduce the risk of overdose death.
