Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Nampa DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Methods of Establishing Paternity in Nampa, ID

When a Nampa child is born to two unmarried parents, Idaho state law will require the establishment of paternity for the father to receive parental rights and to establish child support agreements. Idaho provides two methods of establishing paternity, including the signage of a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity. This form can be completed at the hospital following the child's birth to declare the child's birth father.

Because acknowledgments are completely voluntary, if a parent refuses to establish paternity, court action will need to be taken. Filing a court order to establish paternity with Canyon County Family Court will require the presumed father or biological mother to appear for court and undergo DNA testing. If DNA testing identifies the biological father, paternity will be established along with any child support agreements if necessary.

Importance of DNA Paternity Testing in Nampa, ID

Prior to establishing paternity, if there is any sort of reasonable doubt in a child's paternity, it's crucial that DNA testing services are first used to accurately determine the father. Failing to determine a Nampa child's biological father before the establishment of paternity could result in the presumed father being held financially responsible for a child that is not biologically his.

Under Idaho paternity law, if a parent discovers the presumed father is not the biological father and paternity is already established, court action will need to be taken to verify the claim of mistaken paternity. This court action will allow a judge to remove any child support obligations from the previously presumed father and will likely require the use of DNA testing to help verify the claim.

Experts in Nampa, ID Say…

Outside of paternity disputes, two Nampa parents may also find themselves needing to navigate other parenting agreements, such as custody and child support. According to family law attorney Joe Frick, after the establishment of paternity, if both parents cannot come to an agreement on their child's custody, court action must be taken. A Canyon County judge will assess various factors to decide on a custody agreement, including the current parent-child relationship, history of domestic violence, and both parents' financial situations.
