The number of drug overdose fatalities in Idaho has increased over the last few years. Between 2015 and 2019, 1,221 Idahoans did not survive a drug overdose. Data for 2020 confirmed an even higher loss of life by drug overdose at a 10 percent increase. Opioid overdoses in Idaho between 2015 and 2019 costed the lives of 591 people. Meridian drug overdose trends follow the same pattern as the state of Idaho. Meridian belongs to Ada County, which reported 236 drug overdose deaths between 2018 and 2020.

Idaho has many initiatives to reduce drug overdose deaths through education, prevention, increased availability of support services, removing financial barriers to treatment, and more. The 2021 update of the Idaho Opioid Misuse and Overdose Strategic Plan 2017-2022 outlines many strategies for how locals plan to address the issue.

Idaho police seized more than 25 pounds of meth in man’s residence

A 44-year-old man sold another person one pound of methamphetamine for $3,000. A few months later, the local police discovered he was distributing illegal substances. They executed a search warrant. Police found 25 pounds of methamphetamine, one pound of cocaine, one and a half pounds of heroin, 20 grams of psilocybin, and several fentanyl pills in his residence. Law enforcement also found tools often used by drug traffickers and seized $10,395 in illicit drug proceeds. The man was charged with 124 months in prison with the intent to distribute heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl.
