Merced, California: Drug abuse trends
For years, California has ranked among the highest number of drug overdose deaths in the country. In 2021, more than six thousand people did not survive drug overdose in California. Drug overdoses cause about 2.31 percent of the overall deaths in California. Over the last three years, drug overdoses have increased each year by 10.37 percent. The current death rate is 15 out of every 100,000 residents in the state.
Merced, similar to the rest of the state, struggles with substance use disorder and drug abuse. Some of the most commonly abused drugs in the city are alcohol, marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, and prescription opioids. Although the number of prescribed opioids is decreasing overall in the USA, one of the most potent opioids—fentanyl—has been making its way to the streets more and more. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can cause death in doses as low as two milligrams.
Merced County – Drug busts and notable events
In June 2022, the seizure of 37 pounds of fentanyl found in Merced County was reported to be the second-largest fentanyl bust in the Central Valley. Police took two people into custody.
In July 2022, Merced County deputies seized over 600 pounds of marijuana, 722 marijuana plants, and fifteen firearms after they served several search warrants in Merced County.
In August 2022, a traffic stop resulted in the discovery of 71 pounds of methamphetamine that was prepped for sale.
In October 2022, another traffic stop led authorities to $145,000 hidden within the vehicle, which they suspected to be obtained from narcotic sales.
In February 2023, a 28-year-old man was arrested for 50 grams of fentanyl with equipment to measure and distribute the paraphernalia. A child was removed from the home and placed with Child Protective Services.
