Merced, California: Drug abuse trends
For years, California has ranked among the highest number of drug overdose deaths in the country. In 2021, more than six thousand people did not survive drug overdose in California. Drug overdoses cause about 2.31 percent of the overall deaths in California. Over the last three years, drug overdoses have increased each year by 10.37 percent. The current death rate is 15 out of every 100,000 residents in the state.
Merced, similar to the rest of the state, struggles with substance use disorder and drug abuse. Some of the most commonly abused drugs in the city are alcohol, marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, and prescription opioids. Although the number of prescribed opioids is decreasing overall in the USA, one of the most potent opioids—fentanyl—has been making its way to the streets more and more.
