In June 2023, Ryan Railsback, a Riverside PD Public Information Officer, spoke about the growing fentanyl epidemic in the Inland Empire, including La Quinta and Riverside County. As police officers investigated five overdose cases in Riverside within 27 hours, Railsback said, "The drug dealers just want your money. They don't care if you die." He added, "When it comes to fentanyl, you do not know what you're getting." Two years earlier, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin also spoke about the rise of fentanyl in Riverside County. "It's now in everything," he said.
