Gresham, Oregon: Local initiatives to curb the number of drug overdoses
Multnomah County has launched several initiatives to combat the opioid crisis. The initiatives focus on prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery. The main goal of Multnomah County's prevention programs is to reduce the risk factors by addressing the root causes of substance use. A key example is the Integrated Clinical Services Division's decision to reduce opioid prescriptions by 97% in dental clinics, which has helped prevent the introduction of opioids to youth.
The county offers policies and practices that minimize the adverse effects of drug use. These harm reduction services include distributing naloxone, providing safe disposal for used supplies, and offering wound care and health education. In 2023 alone, the county's Harm Reduction program helped over 4,200 clients and distributed 50,000 naloxone kits.
Treatment and recovery efforts are shifting to better address fentanyl's unique challenges. The county funds a range of services. These programs aim to connect individuals to support services and help them recover from substance use.
Police arrested a man in Gresham after they seized 12 pounds of fentanyl
In August 2024, investigators from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office seized approximately 12 pounds of fentanyl and over $90,000 in cash. They arrested a 25-year-old man in Gresham. The man was charged with possessing fentanyl with the intent to distribute. He was ordered to remain in custody because he posed a danger to the community, and the authorities were worried he would not attend future court appearances.
The seizure occurred outside the Bridgeway Inn & Suites on Northeast 181st Avenue while investigators were working on an unrelated drug case. They observed the man driving a Toyota Camry with California plates and noticed a woman on the motel's second floor dropping a bag and shirt down to him. After receiving the items, he quickly drove off but was soon pursued by police after he ran a red light and made a U-turn when spotting an officer. Police eventually stopped him and found a bulge of cash during a search. They discovered a red backpack containing white powder, two drug presses, and a title for the car in the trunk. Then they searched his motel room, where they found $91,424. The man admitted his involvement in drug trafficking.
