Notable News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Lake Oswego, OR

In July 2019, a Lake Oswego man who was considered a prolific darknet narcotics seller was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison after distributing fentanyl that was linked to a fatal Wisconsin overdose. According to investigation reports, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service originally intercepted a suspicious package addressed to the Lake Oswego offender back in 2017. Inside the package, officials found a Ziploc bag containing cyclopropyl fentanyl.

Law enforcement went on to begin surveillance at the suspect's home, where they conducted a controlled delivery of this package. Once the suspect was observed picking up the package, he was then arrested and charged with one count of distributing a controlled substance resulting in death. The offender was also ordered to forfeit around $764,000 and a 2013 Audi sedan during sentencing.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse Concerns in Lake Oswego, OR

In part of two nationwide lawsuits involving pharmaceutical companies and their role in fielding the ongoing opioid crisis, Clackamas County recently announced they would be receiving a portion of Oregon's upcoming $333 million settlement payout. According to officials, Clackamas County is set to receive approximately $13.7 million dollars, which will be used to make strategic investments that combat opioid abuse concerns across Lake Oswego and the surrounding county.

Many of these investments will target efforts to reduce the surging amount of opioid overdose deaths seen across the county. Some of these efforts include expanding Naloxone access to residents, expanding neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome services, and implementing an evidence-based prevention program throughout local community schools.
