Grand Junction, Colorado: Drug abuse trends

According to the Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) and Western Colorado Drug Task Force (WCDTF), "rainbow pills" have made their way into Mesa County. Rainbow pills are fentanyl pills that are bold, vibrant colors designed to attract attention from young children and teens.

Fentanyl is a highly addictive and powerful drug, and even a few milligrams can be deadly. The number of people dying because of fentanyl has been rising in Mesa County. In 2019, only three deaths were connected to fentanyl overdose, but in the first nine months of 2022, Mesa County already saw 12 fentanyl-involved deaths. Grand Junction is trying to fight this trend by educating students, teachers, and parents and encouraging everyone to discuss the dangers of this potent opioid.

Authorities in Mesa County seized over 100,000 fentanyl pills

In May 2023, Mesa County Sheriff's Office made a traffic stop east of Grand Junction and seized over 100,000 fentanyl pills and 75 pounds of methamphetamine. The stop involved the arrest of a 25-year-old male. He is facing multiple charges, including distributing and possessing controlled substances, conspiracy to sell and distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, and child abuse.
