DNA Test – Grand Junction, Colorado

Grand Junction CO DNA Testing Locations

Types of DNA Tests at our Grand Junction, Colorado locations:

The most commonly ordered DNA test is a Paternity Test to conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.

Paternity Testing can be performed at our testing centers. DNA Testing can be done for other close family relationships, such as:

Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)
Sibling DNA Test (possible brothers, sisters, or half-siblings)
Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Grand Junction DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

DNA Testing Information about Grand Junstion, CO

Grand Junction Man Meets Sibling After 60 Years

Adopted at just one month old, Grand Junction resident David Anderson always wondered about his biological family. As an adult, he decided to take a DNA test to see if he would match up with any relatives. Imagine his surprise when the test revealed that he had a full biological sister — and she lived not far from him! In fact, Misty De La Rosa, who grew up in Denver, actually went to school with Anderson’s wife.

They’ve since reunited and describe the scenario as “an emotional experience.” She never knew she had a younger brother that had been adopted, and both are thrilled to have discovered each other.

Colorado Fertility Doctor Scandal

When Maia Emmons-Boring received a message from a stranger claiming to be her half-sister after taking a DNA test, she assumed it was a scam. She later learned that not only was this allegation true, but the man she assumed was her father for 40 years was not. While this is not incredibly uncommon, the details that later unfolded certainly are.

According to a lawsuit, Grand Junction fertility doctor Paul Brennan Jones allegedly used his own sperm to impregnate a series of women between 1976 and 1997. Emmons-Boring and her alleged half-sister have since uncovered at least five more previously unknown half-siblings. When asked whether he committed the crime he’s accused of, Jones said “I don’t deny it. I don’t admit it.” He went on to say “That’s an impertinent question… Because I’m not going to answer it.”

Resolving Paternity Disputes in Colorado

When a child’s mother and alleged father don’t agree on the paternity of the child, steps must be taken to come to a legal resolution. According to Grand Junction family law attorneys at Whitham Law Group, either the mother or the father can petition the courts to establish legal paternity. In this case, the courts will require a DNA test prior to making a ruling.
