Drug overdose is a nationwide problem in the United States, with over a hundred people dying daily. The death rate due to drug overdose has been increasing, and most deaths involve prescription painkillers.

Alcohol-impaired driving and drug overdoses have become more of an issue in El Paso County. Between 2014 and 2018, 106 people died from drinking and driving. From 2016 to 2018, the drug poisoning rate was 258 deaths per 100,000 people. The opioid prescriptions rate was also high at 30.6 prescriptions per 100 people in 2018.

Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in El Paso, TX

Texas has a Prevention Resource Center that focuses on providing better help for substance abuse prevention. In general, Texas’ response to the opioid epidemic is additional outreach and training to prevent overdoses, which means education in this field is a significant focus.

Moreover, some harm reduction programs, such as Punto de Partida, say they save ten lives monthly because of their program.
