Substance Abuse Statistics for Las Cruces, NM

In 2018, 63% of drug overdose deaths reported in New Mexico were opioid-related, totaling 338 annual fatalities.
The Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome/Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome rate for New Mexico in 2017 was 15.1 cases per 1,000 hospital births.
In 2019, the opioid dispensing rate for Doña Ana County, the locality in which Las Cruces resides, was 35.9 per 100 residents.

Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Las Cruces, NM

Following a year-long investigation, 16 suspects were charged for their roles in a large-scale drug trafficking operation located around Las Cruces in 2018. With combined efforts of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), this extensive investigation targeted cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine traffickers in southern New Mexico and west Texas.

The investigation first began in 2017, when law enforcement targeted Las Cruces, NM resident Eulalio Valentin Chavez, the suspected leader of the local drug organization. The investigation later included four additional drug trafficking organizations in the Las Cruces and El Paso areas. During this investigation, law enforcement seized approximately 13 kilograms of methamphetamine, 3.6 kilograms of cocaine, and 2.5 kilograms of heroin, as well as seven firearms, eight vehicles, and $124,855 in cash.

Local Efforts to Curb Substance Abuse in Las Cruces, NM

With ongoing concerns of adult drug and alcohol misuse in Las Cruces and the surrounding Doña Ana County, local officials created a program to approach the problem at one of its roots: the local youth population. The Unified Prevention Coalition, or UP!, focuses on efforts to reduce, prevent, and treat substance abuse in local youth populations.

With the collaboration of over ten local sectors, including the Doña Ana County School District and Police Department, the Unified Prevention Coalition works to offer resources to youth all across Doña Ana County, including its rural areas. This includes meetings, treatment resources, and general education for parents and caretakers on prevention of substance abuse in youth.
