Eagan Overdose Death Leads to Murder Charges
In 2019, 50-year-old Michelle Cahill died after using a mix of heroin, fentanyl, and acetyl fentanyl. Now, the man who sold it to her has been charged with third-degree murder. Jason Michael Slattum, a 41-year-old resident of Hastings, is currently awaiting his trial.
Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom and members of law enforcement take the area’s drug problem very seriously. Backstrom is quoted as saying “Overdose deaths from heroin, particularly when laced with fentanyl, are far too common…” he went on to acknowledge that “this problem has been escalating in recent months.”
Minnesota Drug Seizures Soar in 2019
Statistics released by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety show just how committed law enforcement is to addressing the state’s drug problem. In 2019, there were significant increases in seizures of meth, heroin, cocaine, and prescription pills. Law enforcement seized 1,706 pounds of meth, which is a 49% increase over 2018. Cocaine seizures almost doubled, going from 59 pounds in 2018 to 106 pounds in 2019. Likewise, heroin seizures more than doubled, increasing from 24.98 pounds in 2018 to 55 pounds in 2019. Prescription pill seizures also increased from 16,513 in 2018 to 30,475 in 2019.
