Chesapeake, VA: Drug abuse trends

As one of the deadliest years in the USA for substance abuse overdoses, 2020 made no exceptions for Virginia. America has been fighting the opioid epidemic for years, but the surge of drug-related emergencies peaked in 2020. Like many states, Virginia struggles with heroin, fentanyl, and prescription medication abuse, and rates of drug overdoses continue to rise.

Some experts believe the COVID-19 pandemic caused the peak in 2020. People more commonly started to abuse drugs to escape the isolation, depression, and anxiety the pandemic introduced. Even in 2021, more people continued to struggle with substance abuse.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Chesapeake, VA

Locals are working on reducing drug abuse in Chesapeake, VA. The Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) consists of five steps—Assessment, Capacity, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation—to help prevention professionals understand the environmental and behavioral health issues related to substance abuse.

The Community Coalitions of Virginia (CCoVA) primarily focus on preventing and reducing substance abuse and improving the quality of life. They also try to educate coalition members about marijuana and possible issues related to legalization.

Virginia ABC Education and Prevention aims to eliminate underage and high-risk drinking by implementing programs that allow the community to educate people better. These programs are geared towards kids and young adults.

The Virginia Department of Education is also addressing substance abuse prevention and intervention in local schools, although no state funding is currently allocated for these efforts.
