Birmingham, AL: Drug abuse trends

Alabama’s geographical location, centered next to the Gulf of Mexico, puts it in a vulnerable position to cultivate and traffic drugs. A student survey showed that about 2.45 percent of people over the age of 17 suffer from drug addiction in Alabama. This study showed that Alabama’s teenagers are more likely to use alcohol or drugs than people the same age from different states.

About 87,000 people in Alabama reported an issue with cocaine use in 2018. Cocaine addiction accounted for about eight percent of all Alabama substance abuse. Another major issue is methamphetamine, one of the fastest-growing illicit drugs in the area. Its abuse increased hospitalization by over 245 percent from 2008 to 2015, and is still growing at an astonishing rate.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Birmingham, Alabama

The Addiction Prevention Coalition targets substance abuse in Central Alabama with the goal of eliminating addiction. The non-profit has supported the greater Birmingham community for more than ten years. Throughout the years, they have been responsible for multiple prevention programs and educational events, and have tried to prevent drug addiction and relapse.

The coalition aims to reduce the stigma of drug addiction, educate the community, provide a sense of hope for those who want to recover, and ultimately lead people to healthier lifestyles free from the negative effects of substance abuse.
