Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Arlington DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Arlington, Virginia – DNA Testing

Establishing Paternity in Arlington, VA

When two unmarried Arlington parents have a child, only the mother will possess parental rights until both parents legally establish paternity in the state of Virginia. By establishing paternity, Arlington parents can legally declare a child’s father to provide the Virginia man with his paternal rights and the ability to have his name placed on the child’s birth certificate.

The simplest way two Arlington parents can establish paternity in the state of Virginia is through the completion of an Acknowledgment of Paternity form. This form will first be presented for completion at the hospital following a child’s birth, but can also be completed at a later date through an Arlington County Child Support Services location. This form is completely voluntary.

Dealing with Paternity Denial in Arlington, VA

In certain unfortunate instances, a parent may refuse to complete the paternity establishment process due to the belief that the presumed father is actually not the biological father. In these situations, the most important thing an Arlington parent can do is conduct DNA paternity testing to properly identify the child’s father and avoid any further delay in establishing paternity.

In the event that one parent refuses to conduct DNA paternity testing, the opposing parent can file a petition to establish paternity through an Arlington County Family Court. An Arlington judge has the legal power to summon the opposing parent to appear in court, complete DNA testing, and properly complete the paternity establishment process.

Experts in Arlington, VA Say…

After two Arlington parents have successfully identified the child’s biological father to establish legal paternity in the state of Virginia, they may also need to legally establish a child support order. According to Arlington family law attorney James Livesay, the state code bases child support on three different types of custodial arrangements: sole, split, and shared custody. Depending on which custodial arrangement is agreed upon in court, a monthly child support amount will be calculated to best meet the needs of the child.
