Opioid Overdose Deaths in Solano County
Opioid abuse is a problem across the nation, and Vallejo is no exception. The deadly drug Fentanyl is of particular concern. From 2018 to 2019, the number of Fentanyl-related deaths in Solano County jumped from five to 16. While this number may seem low, experts believe it may be misleading.
Statistics show that the county’s opioid prescribing rate and the number of emergency room visits for overdoses are both approximately a third higher than the state average while the number of reported overdose deaths is about half of the state average. This points to some possible issues with “cause of death” reporting.
The opioid crisis in the area isn’t expected to level off until at least 2025. It’s currently estimated that approximately 3,000 Solano County residents suffer from “opioid use disorder” and are in need of treatment.
Vallejo Relaxes Police Drug Testing
Despite objections from the local community, the Vallejo City Council approved changes to the city’s contract with its police force. The previous contract called for drug and alcohol testing after certain incidents like a police shooting, a vehicular accident that results in injury or death, or any other incident that results in someone’s bodily harm or death.
New rules state that officers are only subject to testing if a supervisor determines there’s a “reasonable suspicion of intoxication.” According to the city’s director of human resources, the change is “in line with industry best practices in other departments.”
