Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Temple

Temple residents dealing with addiction issues and troubles with the law may get a second chance, thanks to Bell County’s DWI/Drug Court. This 12-month program requires ongoing mental health and/or substance abuse treatment, attendance at all scheduled court appearances (a minimum of two times per month), frequent random alcohol and drug testing, and additional requirements. The program is designed to give them the support they need to turn their lives around, and once the program is completed, defendants may receive favorable resolutions to their court cases.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Temple, TX

While recreational marijuana is legal in many states across the U.S., in Texas, it’s still a criminal offense. According to the Temple-based Law Office of Katie L. Gomez, while other counties in Texas are decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana, Bell County remains committed to prosecuting marijuana offenders to the fullest extent of the law.

Currently, individuals caught with two ounces of cannabis or less are subject to a maximum of 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine. Possession of larger amounts comes with stiffer penalties, and if the possession is deemed to be with intent to sell, the penalties are even more severe.

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Temple

The streets of Temple are a bit safer following the 2022 indictment of 10 members of the Killas With Aggression (KWA) gang. Temple police and the FBI announced charges including drug trafficking, racketeering, and other crimes. Five of the men were also accused of conspiring to commit five murders in Temple, Hearne, and Belton.

U.S. Attorney Gregg Sofer referred to the gang members’ activities as a “reign of terror perpetrated by a violent enterprise resulting in death and suffering on a frightening scale.” If convicted, each of the men could be sentenced to anywhere from 20 years to life in prison.
