In 2019, Waco and McLennan County had 22 opioid-related overdose deaths.

From 2017 to 2020 in Waco and McLennan County, opioid-related emergency department visits have declined. In 2017, McLennan County had 100 opioid-related visits. 2018 had 95 emergency department visits; in 2020, there were 64.

In 2020, Waco and McLennan County had 39 opioid-related calls to the poison control center. In 2021, there were 46.

In 2021, Waco and McLennan first responders and police officers administered naloxone for opioid overdoses 169 times.

In 2017 in Waco and McLennan County, 18 accidental overdose deaths occurred.

In 2018, there were 29 accidental overdose deaths in Waco and McLennan County.

There were 22 accidental overdose deaths in McLennan County in 2019.

Experts Say…

Lindsay Smith, Cenikor Foundation’s acting facility manager in Waco, talked about the opioid epidemic in Waco, TX, and how anyone can be a victim of addiction. “It doesn’t matter how much education they have or don’t have. It doesn’t matter how much money they have or don’t have,” she said. “It doesn’t matter their religion or skin color. People of all types can be addicts.”

Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Waco, TX

In Waco, TX in June of 2022, a large drug bust led to the seizure of more than $500,000 worth of meth and the arrests of three people. The drug bust followed a months-long investigation, leading officers to find 38.5 pounds of methamphetamine, 26 ounces of marijuana, about $18,000 in drug proceeds, an AR-15-style weapon, and a Glock pistol.

In June of 2022 in Waco, 27 people from the Waco area were indicted on drug charges. The arrests were the result of a multi-agency investigation into a methamphetamine distribution ring. The 27 individuals faced charges that include the conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute at least 500 grams of methamphetamine.
