Surprise, Arizona: Drug abuse trends
In Arizona, the number of drug overdoses caused by opioids peaked in July 2020 and was similar again in 2021. Maricopa County was one of the counties with the highest rate of opioid deaths during 2020 and 2021. However, the number of overdose deaths in 2019 was already high, with 1,078 individuals who did not survive.
The number of fatal overdoses in Arizona hit 2,644 by December 2020, a 33.5% increase from the previous year. Fentanyl, a potent opioid, was present in more than 60 percent of all overdose deaths in 2020 in Arizona. Fentanyl became popular in the USA because it is easily manufactured, available, and powerful. However, it only takes a very small amount of the substance to fatally overdose.
Huge drug bust in Maricopa County: Police seized a million pills of fentanyl
One of the largest drug busts in the state led to arresting two men in their twenties who are now facing multiple drug-related charges. Authorities said they had intel that helped them to get a search warrant on their home and car. After that, they discovered more than one million pills of fentanyl. Both suspects were booked in the Maricopa County jail.
The Phoenix Police worked with the Drug Enforcement bureau in Maricopa County on the case, and they admitted that the bust was the largest fentanyl seizure in their department’s history.
