Maricopa County has undertaken multiple efforts to address and mitigate the effects of drug misuse within its jurisdiction, which includes Mesa. In November 2022, a significant law enforcement operation led to the arrest of four individuals across two separate but substantial drug busts, one of which marked a historic event for the local police department. On November 9, a man, aged 42, was apprehended in the initial bust, seizing 28,500 fentanyl pills, methamphetamine and cocaine, over $3,100 in cash, and a firearm. The day's second operation significantly overshadowed the first in scale, described by Mesa Police as their "largest drug bust" to date. This operation led to the arrests of three individuals, capturing 714,300 fentanyl pills, fentanyl powder, meth, heroin, cocaine, and more than $17,000.
These actions, though unconnected, showcased the department's commitment to curtailing drug trafficking within the community. Detective Richard Encinas of Mesa Police highlighted the potentially lifesaving impact of these busts, emphasizing the importance of such operations in preventing overdoses and saving lives.
