In March 2023, Slidell officers responded to a call for an improperly parked vehicle at the Super 8 Motel. Inside the car, the officers found a man who was possessing large amounts of methamphetamine, two firearms, and cash. The man and another individual were renting a room at the motel. Slidell officers searched the room, finding marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, about $30,000 cash, a semi-automatic gun with an obliterated serial number, and a rifle. They also discovered a currency counter, drug paraphernalia, and Honda Accord. Both individuals were arrested at the hotel.
St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston said that overdose deaths in the area are 100% preventable. "Our office and agencies around the country are finding the toxic opioid Fentanyl in many other street drugs," he said. Fentanyl is commonly mixed with other street drugs and made to look like other well-known narcotics, like Percocet, Adderall, and Xanax. Dr. Malcom Armstrong with Mandeville Pharmacy said, "I wouldn't take one tablet if it didn't come from a licensed pharmacy. You don't know what you're getting off the street." Preston said that "one pill can kill." He added, "Unless it comes from a pharmacy with a doctor's prescription, you shouldn't put it in your body."
