Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of New Orleans and Orleans Parish

From 2019 to 2020 in New Orleans and Orleans Parish, accidental drug-related deaths increased by 51 percent.

In 2019 in Orleans Parish, there were 241 accidental overdose fatalities, 82 percent of which were male. In 2020, this number increased to 365, and 75 percent were male.

In 2020 in Orleans Parish, 78 percent of drug-related deaths involved fentanyl, which was a 107 percent increase from 2019.

Cocaine-related deaths increased in New Orleans and Orleans Parish by 52 percent from 2019 to 2020.

From 2019 to 2020 in New Orleans and Orleans Parish, there was a 32 percent increase in amphetamine-related deaths.

Experts Say…

New Orleans Coroner, Dr. Dwight McKenna said, “The opioid epidemic in Orleans Parish is being fueled by a highly lethal, synthetic opiate known as fentanyl. As a result, street drugs in New Orleans are more deadly than they have ever been. In 2020, the number of overdose deaths in New Orleans was almost double the number of homicides.”

Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in New Orleans, LA

In 2017, a months-long undercover narcotics investigation by the New Orleans Police Department and the Louisiana State Police led to the arrest of 42 drug dealers. The 42 drug dealers arrested all sold drugs to an undercover officer and are accused of selling crack cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. The investigation occurred in the summer at locations throughout New Orleans where residents reported drug activity.

In February of 2022, a New Orleans man pled guilty to federal drug trafficking charges. James Alexander, 51, admitted to participating in a conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin. When agents learned of his conspiracy to sell heroin, they set up surveillance and watched the transaction. They observed the car Alexander got into, driven by a female, and followed it. When he exited the car, he attempted to flee on foot while discarding a food container he was carrying but was arrested. When officers recovered the food container, it contained three kilograms of heroin, valued at about $150,000.
