Experts Say...

In February of 2021, the Jefferson Parish Coroner warned the public of fentanyl analogs, specifically para-fluorofentanyl and carfentanil. Gerry Cvitanovich, MD said there were two fatal overdoses of each in the first week of January alone. He stated, "Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid approximately 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl. A common legal use of this drug is as an elephant tranquilizer." He explained that the potency of para-fluorofentanyl is similar to fentanyl and has not been widely used yet. As of December 2020, sixteen deaths nationwide have been reported as a result of these drugs.

These drugs can be ingested by snorting, injecting, or by oral pills, and are sold so that users think they're getting heroin or fentanyl. According to the coroner, "The presence of these drugs in Jefferson Parish and the surrounding parishes is cause for concern given their relative strength and the potential for an increase in overdoses and overdose-related deaths, even among opioid-tolerant users."
