Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Santa Clarita, CA

Multiple initiatives have been created over the past several years to target the ongoing effects of the opioid epidemic in Santa Clarita and the surrounding Los Angeles County. In recent years, the University of California recognized an unfulfilled need surrounding methamphetamine-specific initiatives. This discovery led to the Los Angeles County Methamphetamine Prevention Initiative.

This training initiative works alongside community service agencies and outreach workers to educate and train on approaches that effectively target the reduction of methamphetamine abuse. The various approaches the initiative takes include in-service training to the Los Angeles County Methamphetamine Task Forces, developing web-based training modules, and providing technical assistance to the Los Angeles County Alcohol and Drug Program Administration (ADPA).

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Santa Clarita, CA

In January 2021, the state of California passed SB 855 to better assist Santa Clarita and surrounding California residents struggling to access substance abuse treatment resources. Under previous law, California residents could not have their substance abuse treatment cost covered by insurance if the program exceeded more than a week. SB 855 expands on the current Health Parity Act to create larger restrictions on health insurance companies and their ability to limit coverage.

With the nationally recognized standard for substance abuse treatment being 30 days, SB 855 now rules that California insurers are not permitted to limit patients to a week of coverage and will be required to cover the full 30 days. This expanded access can help ensure California residents receive more long-term program access to overall improve treatment effectiveness.
