In Burbank, Ca in 2014, a Burbank pharmacy lost its license after its employees failed to examine prescriptions that resulted in multiple patient deaths. The pharmacy dispensed narcotics and painkillers to five people who later died.
The pharmacy was said to cater to patients of doctors who were later convicted of crimes related to prescriptions.
By law, pharmacists are required to scrutinize prescriptions, examine patients, and refuse to give drugs to patients who don’t have a need for them, which is what employees of this pharmacy failed to do.
Most of the patients were in their twenties and would travel more than forty miles to see these doctors and then travel another five miles to the pharmacy, where they’d usually pay with cash.
One of the doctors was a general practitioner and three-quarters of the prescriptions he wrote were for pain killers or other commonly abused drugs.
