In 2021, a total of 198 drug overdose deaths were recorded in Wake County, the locality in which Raleigh resides.

Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Raleigh, NC

In February 2022, the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration announced the arrest of a Raleigh police officer following an internal investigation that discovered he was distributing cocaine while on duty. Keven Rodriguez, a Field Operations Division Officer for the Raleigh Police Department, was charged with both cocaine distribution and firearm possession after the department received information of trafficking activity involving the on-duty cop.

According to reports, the Raleigh Police Department received information from a confidential source that Rodriguez met an individual in his patrol car and exchanged 56 grams of cocaine for $2,600 in cash. Because Rodriguez was in possession of his duty firearm at the time of the transaction, he was booked on both distribution and firearms charges and faces a mandatory penalty of 5 years in prison if convicted in court.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Raleigh, NC

To help curb substance abuse concerns in Raleigh, Wake County offers both a Naloxone and Syringe Exchange Program to help residents reduce the health risks involved with opioid abuse. The Wake County Health and Human Services and the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition offer free Naloxone kits that can be used in the event of an emergency overdose to reverse deadly side effects.

These kits are available to active IV drug users, people on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), and residents formerly incarcerated with a history of opioid abuse. Likewise, county officials offer a syringe exchange program to help prevent the spread of HIV, hepatitis C, and other bloodborne diseases that are commonly spread through IV drug use.

Health Street was easy to use, the tracking was very thorough (emails and texts), and the results were returned very quickly. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because their local partner - FastMed - was anything but fast. Very slow service for something that should have been a quick in and out. Ill use Health Street again - I will just go to another facility.

Customer service was excellent. I received the paperwork by email immediately and was directed to the facility closest to my house. The test results came back within 36 hours of submitting my lab specimen. I appreciate that the results were sent to me as soon as available, even though it was late in the evening. I recommend Health Street and will use it again if necessary.
