Lubbock, Texas: Drug overdose trends

In 2021, there was an increase in overdose deaths in Texas. Officially, around 5,000 people died due to drug overdose. In reality, this number is likely higher since the state has medical examiner offices in only 15 out of 254 counties. Texas had nearly 4,000 opioid-related calls to the Texas Center Network in 2021, and almost 8,000 opioid-related emergency room visits in 2020.

Methamphetamine is still the most significant drug threat in Texas. The threat of fentanyl is also increasing because it is used to cut heroin and other common street drugs. Most people do not even realize the drug they are using has fentanyl in it, which often results in drug overdoses and even death.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Lubbock, TX

The Select Committee on Opioids and Substance Abuse in Texas has considered multiple suggestions for curbing substance abuse in Lubbock, TX. Some recommendations included:

arrow_forward
Encouraging doctors to make opioids the last option for treating pain
arrow_forward
Training medical staff and prescribers to watch for signs of “doctor shopping” in patients that seek prescriptions from multiple doctors
arrow_forward
Making more medication-assisted treatment options available for patients and doctors
arrow_forward
Expanding drug courts
arrow_forward
Including drugs like naloxone, which helps reverse overdose, in first aid kits
arrow_forward
Enacting Good Samaritan laws, which would legally protect people who help those who are overdosing
arrow_forward
Considering including a additional drug used for overdose prevention as a safety precaution when prescribing opioids

The Texas Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) has also led to decreasing prescriptions like opiates, synthetic narcotics, and benzodiazepine.
