Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Lakeville DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Lakeville, Minnesota – DNA Testing

Establishing paternity in Lakeville, MN

Unwed parents in Minnesota have two options for establishing paternity:

looks_one
Sign the Recognition of Parentage form. File this with the Minnesota Department of Health, often at the hospital after a child’s birth. Hospital staff usually assist with this. Only sign if you are certain of being the child’s biological parent, as this document is legally binding.

Opt for court-ordered paternity. Ask the court to name the alleged father as the legal father, which usually requires undergoing a DNA test to ensure the biological relationship between the child and the father. DNA tests are painless, quick, and reliable.

For DNA testing services in Lakeville, turn to Health Street for a reliable partner. We offer highly accurate DNA testing services for both personal clarity and legal use.

Lakeville, Minnesota: Reasons to establish paternity

Being an unwed mother in Lakeville has implications. Without established paternity, she cannot legally request child support, and the sole financial responsibility for the child rests upon her. Beyond financial aspects, not establishing paternity can mean the child misses out on the following:

Health and life insurance benefits
arrow_forward
Social Security
arrow_forward
Inheritance rights from the father
arrow_forward
Access to comprehensive medical histories of both parents
arrow_forward
The opportunity to build a relationship with both parents

For potential fathers, unrecognized paternity means not being named on the child’s birth certificate. This absence of legal acknowledgment denies rights like seeking custody, spending time with the child, or including the child in medical or dental insurance plans.

DNA test reunited long lost sisters in Minnesota

After being separated for years and unaware of each other’s existence, two sisters from Romania’s lost generation were recently reunited. Three decades ago, the fall of a communist dictator in Romania led to overcrowded orphanages filled with isolated children. A Lakeville family adopted Lia, while her sister, Zoyie, was adopted in Kansas. When Lia took a DNA test and a bystander recognized her story as similar to Zoyie’s, the two were connected and eventually met. They even discovered they have another sister and a brother in Romania and plan to visit them in January.
