Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Glendale, CA

The city of Glendale and the surrounding Los Angeles County has experienced a continuously increasing rate of the local homeless population. Alongside tough living conditions, this homeless population has experienced overwhelming growth in the rate of drug overdose mortality. To help better curb this ongoing concern, Los Angeles County created the Homeless Mortality Prevention Initiative (HMPI) Workgroup.

Under the HMPI program, government officials are working to better supply the local homeless population with the right tools and resources to reduce deadly drug overdose and other concerns associated with substance abuse. These resources include syringe exchange programs, enhanced Naloxone access, and the further development of recovery-focused housing options that can be used to provide housing and recovery resources simultaneously to these individuals.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Glendale, CA

In 2019, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a new state bill into law in an effort to better tackle the growing concern of opioid abuse and increasing overdose deaths experienced across Glendale and the surrounding state. Under AB 2760, individuals who currently stand at a high risk of opioid overdose may now more easily acquire the opioid overdose treatment drug, Naloxone.

Under this new law, doctors who prescribe opioids to patients are mandated to also offer a Naloxone prescription. In the event that a Naloxone prescription is requested, a doctor must also provide education on emergency administration for an opioid overdose. It’s recommended that Naloxone administration training is also provided to the families of the individual requesting the prescription.
