Glen Allen, Virginia - Drug Testing

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Henrico County

In June of 2022, Nikike N. Tyler, a major drug kingpin from Henrico County, pled guilty to operating a criminal enterprise and laundering his drug proceeds through shell businesses. He was sentenced to 23 years. Throughout the investigation, his network led detectives through four major U.S. cities and into Mexico. Ultimately, they were able to seize more than 100 pounds of cocaine and heroin worth millions of dollars.

According to Henrico Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Susan Parrish, "Tyler was a major drug trafficker in the Richmond region." The impact of removing his organization from the streets is immeasurable, due to the toll that drug use and addiction takes on the entire community.

Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Henrico County

Much like the rest of the nation, Glen Allen, Henrico County, and the state of Virginia have experienced a spike in drug overdose deaths in recent years. In the first half of 2020, Henrico County experienced 36 drug overdose deaths, while this number increased to 69 in the first half of 2021. By the end of 2021, there had been nearly 800 overdoses in the county, with 96 of them being fatal.

Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Glen Allen

As drug overdoses in Henrico County began to skyrocket, in 2020, Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas proposed a $14 million county-funded detox and recovery center. The proposal included a 12 to 16-bed center, which would be built in Eastern Henrico. In his proposal, Vithoulkas suggested that the facility be managed by Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services and operated in partnership with one or more non-government agencies.

Soon, residents in Glen Allen and the surrounding area may have a new recovery option. In 2022, the proposed facility moved one step closer to fruition as President Joe Biden signed a bill into law that would provide Henrico County with $1 million to help build the facility. The county has also issued a request for proposal (RFP) seeking candidates for the public-private partnership.
