Elk Grove, California: Drug abuse trends

California is the number one state in the country for drug overdose deaths. From 2015 to 2019, deaths from fentanyl use increased by about 10 times. Between 2018 and 2019, 2.9 million Californians had a substance abuse disorder, about nine percent of the state’s population.

Sacramento County Substance Use Prevention and Treatment (SUPT) surveyed more than 11,000 participants who had received treatment services within the last year and found methamphetamine to be the primary drug of choice for people aged 18 and older. The primary drug of choice for people aged 17 and younger was marijuana.

From 2010 to 2019, the rate of opioid prescriptions in the state decreased by 34 percent. Despite this sharp decrease in the availability of prescription drugs, more than 2,300 individuals died from opioid overdoses in California in 2019.

Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Elk Grove, CA
