Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Cut Off, LA

In April 2021, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Department announced the successful takedown of local narcotics distribution rings with the arrest of 33 individuals from the Cut Off and surrounding Lafourche Parish area. The investigation was titled Operation Bad BOI, which is based on the street name for heroin, commonly referred to as “BOI.”

The investigation began in late 2020 and took shape with numerous searches and arrests that occurred over a two-month period in the South Lafourche area. Operation Bad BOI targeted the distribution of heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl, and included the raids of eight local residents, 33 arrests, and the seizure of more than $20,000.

Many of the individuals arrested were charged with various controlled substance and drug paraphernalia possession offenses. According to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Department, Operation Bad BOI significantly impacted the availability of controlled substances throughout the parish and serves as a clear message to drug violators to stay wary of their choices.

Rules and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Cut Off, LA

In 2018, new rules and regulations went into effect under Act 82 in an effort to reduce unsafe opioid prescribing practices. Under Act 82, a healthcare professional is no longer allowed to issue more than a seven-day opioid supply to first-time adult patients suffering from an acute condition.

For minors, an opioid prescription can never exceed a seven-day supply and physicians must also discuss the risk of opioid use with a parent or guardian. The same can be also said for adult patients, for whom health professionals must discuss the addiction risks involved with opioid use prior to dispensing a prescription.
