Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse Concerns in Cheyenne, WY

Back in the late '90s, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) developed the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (RMHIDTA) program. This multi-state effort incorporates the use of various law enforcement groups, including Laramie County law enforcement, to more effectively disrupt and dismantle drug trafficking organizations in the Rocky Mountain area.

Rocky Mountain HIDTA program participants follow a mission to encourage collaboration amongst federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement groups to reduce the flow of illegal drugs in and out of various major Rocky Mountain area cities, including Cheyenne. To date, the Rocky Mountain HIDTA program has grown to a team of 130 law enforcement groups, 24 investigative task forces, and four highway interdiction teams.

Local News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Cheyenne, WY

The Cheyenne Police Department announced the arrest of three local residents in May 2023 after a K-9 unit helped lead a large discovery of illicit narcotics. According to reports, the three Cheyenne residents were traveling on Interstate 80 when law enforcement conducted a routine traffic stop after noticing the vehicle had expired tags. Officers used a K-9 unit when conducting the traffic stop, which quickly alerted them of something inside the vehicle.

Cheyenne law enforcement went on to search the vehicle and occupants. The driver was found in possession of more than three grams of fentanyl while the two other occupants were found in possession of more than 1,700 fentanyl pills. The three occupants of the vehicle were then arrested and charged with felony drug possession as well as felony drug manufacturing and delivery.
