Between 2018 to 2020, Bowie experienced a 59 percent increase in drug-related overdose fatalities, and a 39 percent surge in alcohol overdose deaths. Prince George's County also noted a rise in opiate medication prescriptions, with a rate of 24.8 prescriptions per 100 residents in 2020. Substance abuse affects individuals across various demographics, but males have a notably higher overdose rate in the area. In 2020, the male overdose rate stood at 40.1 per 100,000 residents, in contrast to the female rate of 11 per 100,000 residents.

Prince George's county response to drug abuse

In response to the ongoing drug abuse challenge, Prince George's County encourages individuals to enroll in complimentary Naloxone training. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, potentially saving lives. Participants in the training also receive a Naloxone kit at no charge, further equipping them to prevent overdose fatalities.

Gang Unit investigation led to major seizure of illegal substances

In June 2023, the Prince George's County Police Strategic Investigations Division conducted a successful undercover surveillance operation, confiscating firearms and illicit substances. The operation dismantled a gang possessing nearly half a million dollars in marijuana and firearms. Authorities seized close to 48 pounds of illegal marijuana. According to court records, this group operated within a Bowie subdivision. It was revealed that a college basketball player was affiliated with this group, and currently, three suspects, all in their early 20s, are under investigation.
