Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Bakersfield, CA
In April of 2022, a year-long investigation of a drug trafficking organization in Bakersfield led to six Kern County arrests. The organization distributed large amounts of methamphetamine and heroin imported from Mexico. All six people arrested faced a minimum of 10 years in prison.
In January of 2022, a Bakersfield man was one of 21 arrested for his role in a large-scale multi-state operation. After a 15-month investigation of the gang’s drug operation, officers seized more than 200 pounds of drugs including fentanyl and dozens of guns. According to the DEA, counterfeit pills containing fentanyl, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and cocaine were taken. Demetric Watson of Bakersfield faced possession charges with the intent to distribute drugs.
Experts Say…
Dr. Jasmeet Bains, medical director for Bakersfield Recovery Services said that addiction affects every aspect of a person’s brain, and that addiction worsens when a person takes larger doses that result in the same amount of high that it did with smaller doses. As of 2022, Bains has seen more patients seeking help with fentanyl addiction. “It pains me not only as a doctor but as a member of my community to hear about the explosion in fentanyl overdoses is a very, very big problem and it’s not getting the attention it needs,” she said. Bains said the messaging about fentanyl should change so people understand the negative effects. She said, “Don’t do drugs because you might not have a life. Fentanyl can take away your life in seconds.”
