Like much of the U.S., Akron has seen a significant increase in drug overdoses over the past few years. According to police, there were 60 overdose fatalities in the city as of April 2021, compared with 25 during the same time period in 2020. This represents a 140% increase. This is likely due, in part, to fewer people seeking treatment. Leaders of a local substance abuse facility say that during the pandemic, the number of people seeking detox treatment decreased from 30% to 40%.
The trend of people purposely or unknowingly mixing dangerous drugs is also contributing to the increase in overdoses. For example, it's now far more common to find substances such as fentanyl and carfentanil mixed into street drugs.

A large federal drug bust has led to the arrest of 13 people who were charged with federal drug trafficking. The investigation uncovered an attempt to flood the Akron area with cocaine, meth, and other drugs. Massive amounts of illegal substances were discovered, including 35 pounds of fentanyl. This is particularly disturbing since as little as two milligrams is enough to be deadly. Authorities say the drugs were being stored in and distributed from homes in Akron. The suspects included 10 Akron residents, a Cleveland man, and two individuals from West Virginia.
Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Akron, OH
There are several local organizations that are working hard to minimize the impact of illegal drug use in the Akron area. The Summit County Opiate & Addiction Task Force is a collaboration of businesses, nonprofits, and government entities as well as grassroots organizations, individuals, and families. This group meets once per quarter to discuss the impact of drug use on the community and propose life-saving solutions.
In addition, Summit County's Project DAWN (Deaths avoided with Naloxone) is a community-based project focused on preventing drug overdoses. Participants in the group learn essential skills, such as identifying the signs of overdose and determining the type of overdose, as well as performing rescue breathing, calling 911, and administering Naloxone.
