Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Tupelo DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

How to Establish Paternity in Tupelo

When an unmarried woman has a child in the state of Mississippi, in most cases, the child does not have a legal father until steps have been taken to establish paternity. According to experts at the Tupelo-based Derek L. Hall legal firm, in this case, there are two primary ways to establish paternity. The first is for both parents to sign and file a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form.

If there is a dispute over whether a man is the child’s biological father, paternity may need to be established through legal action, also known as a complaint for establishing paternity. The child’s mother, alleged father, or the Mississippi Department of Human Services can file for paternity with the court system. In most cases, the judge will require a DNA paternity test prior to issuing a ruling.

Reasons to Take a Tupelo Paternity Test

There are several important reasons that unmarried parents may want to take the required steps to establish legal paternity. Attorneys at the Tupelo-based Law Office of Amanda Todd Daniels explain that there are three primary reasons individuals seek paternity tests:

  1. A mother may need to establish paternity so she can receive court-ordered child support.
  2. A man may require a paternity action to prove that he is not the child’s father after being served with child support documents.
  3. A man who believes he is a child’s biological father may need to file for paternity so he can gain court-ordered visitation and/or custody rights.

Presumption of Paternity in Tupelo

When a mother is legally married at the time of a child’s birth or at any time between conception and birth, her husband is presumed to be the child’s legal father, and paternity is automatically established. Attorney Vic Carmody, who serves clients in Tupelo and the surrounding area, explains that this is true regardless of whether the man is the child’s biological father. For example, if a woman had an affair that resulted in pregnancy, her husband is still considered the child’s legal father unless court action is taken to disestablish paternity.
